This work in progress by Sarah and Aisha Jamal explores ideas around the myths / fictions / truths of oral family histories in the context of Middle Eastern diaspora and the Arab spring. This open studio event is an opportunity to have the public test out the installation, to receive feedback and to generate discussion on some of the themes explored in this piece that dates from an artist residency in Amman, Jordan in 2011. In this spirit, we hope to see you on Thursday. LocoMotoArt at Taltow Park - Ten artists from the LMA Collective exhibited 9 sound and visual installations in Tatlow Park on a beautiful warm summer evening on August 18, 2013. Over 100 people attended this exhibition, including residents of this Kitsilano neighbourhood, those who attended last year's exhibition in the same park, and those who had become aware of our work via the major exhibition at Queen Elizabeth Park last month. LMA Artists: Merlyn Chipman, Laura Lee Coles, Dave Leith, Maryam Mobini, Mark Nazemi, Sebnem Ozpeta, Wynne Palmer, Rob Scharein, Sarah Shamash, and Miles Thorogood. LocoMotoArt at Tatlow Park project is supported by a small, but generous grant from the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House through the Neighbourhood Small Grants Greenest City Fund issued by the Vancouver Foundation, in response to the City of Vancouver’s community-led green initiatives mandate. We had some terrific feedback: People remarked how “magical” it was. This is a term that was also used during our Queen Elizabeth exhibition. Other comments are: “Wow!", “This is so interesting”, “Thank you!", “This is amazing!” and “Fantastic”. Regarding reaction to Miles Thorogood’s sound installation:
In response to Dave Leith’s work: "It sounded like the ocean and was very organic in there and I didn't want to distract you even to say hello. I had a friend from sound design with me who also really liked it. I wish there could be longer festival for art that was there". |
